The 27th Annual Parkinson’s Unity Walk Was Held Virtually This Year, Exceeding Expectations, Raising More Than $600,000 to Fund Parkinson’s Disease Research
Since its inception, the Unity Walk has raised more than $28 million to improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s and to work towards a cure!
KINGSTON, N.J. (RELEASE DATE JUNE 22, 2021) — The Parkinson Alliance is pleased to announce that the 27th Virtual Parkinson’s Unity Walk held on Saturday, April 24, 2021, raised more than $600,000 to support critical research, including the development of new therapies to improve the quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s disease and bringing us one step closer in the search for a cure.
One hundred percent of donations raised helps fund Parkinson’s disease research for four leading organizations: American Parkinson Disease Association, Parkinson’s Foundation, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and The Parkinson Alliance.
Since its inception in 1994, the Parkinson’s Unity Walk mission has been to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s disease research. “The fact that we raised more critical funds for research during this second virtual Walk speaks to the commitment and tenacity of the Parkinson’s community” stated Martin Tuchman, Chairman of The Parkinson Alliance.
This was the second year that Covid-19 prevented supporters from walking together in person. And for the second year, our supporters were determined to find new ways to raise money and bring our community together, united in the search for a cure. Our second consecutive virtual Walk featured more ways to connect and share! Nineteen sponsors helped to make this digital experience possible, as both a part of our newly designed Partner Alley and as sponsors of several interactive components. A new Community Center created a space for our participants to gather and share, while the Tuchman Foundation Resource Library offered a new hub for education.
According to Carol Walton, President and CEO of The Parkinson Alliance and Executive Director of the Parkinson’s Unity Walk, “While we typically gather annually in April to fight Parkinson’s disease as one community, this was our second virtual year. We missed New York City again this year, but we came together in new ways, sharing memories from walks past and banding together to make a stand against Parkinson’s disease. The 2021 Virtual Unity Walk was a collaboration and celebration like no other; our sponsors, foundations, and supporters all contributed to creating an amazing digital experience, much of which is available year-round as a resource to our community. We can’t say thank you enough to our participants for their efforts, donors for giving generously, and sponsors for being the reason that every donation goes to research.”
The 2021 Diamond sponsors included Abbott, Amneal, Sunovion, and Supernus. Silver level sponsors included Acorda Therapeutics, Kyowa Kirin, LSVT Global, Inc., Medtronic, NeuroDerm Ltd., Parkinson & Movement Disorder Alliance, and UCB. Additional sponsors included Adamas, Boston Scientific, Lundbeck, Neurocrine Biosciences, Abbvie, De Oro Devices, Hackensack Meridian Health & New Jersey Brain and Spine, and Sio Gene Therapies. A special thanks to Sunovion, sponsor of the Virtual Mosaic, and to UCB, sponsor of My Story Poetry Corner.
Information about research grants funded by the 2021 Parkinson’s Unity Walk will be posted on the Unity Walk’s website later this year.
Until we find a cure, we must continue walking and finding innovative ways to fund research. Information about the 2022 Parkinson’s Unity Walk will be posted soon. Please visit unitywalk.org or call 866-789-9255 to learn more.
